Excerpt: ... that, in his opinion, the trust had at the time that advance was made--as was solemnly stated to me--expended not only the 6,000 they were asking for but three times 6,000, and even more than that. There is a simple statement made from the documents themselves, and from the testimony of the engineer of the trust, of which I have since obtained additional proof from the then chairman of the trust, who, although not able to give the exact figures which the engineer supplied, is also prepared to testify on oath that the trust had spent 20,000 on that colony in addition to the 20,000 which they paid for the land, making 40,000 of an expenditure. All they obtained from the State was 6,000, for 5,000 of which the department held vouchers, although it had sent most of them back for explanation and for the engineer's signature. That is the whole keynote, the whole keystone, and the whole culmination of this attack. Of course that is the part that has been quoted ad lihkumhv the newspaper press, especially by the press critic I was dealing with. The false table issued by this commission in its report., with its nine lines, and every line a false statement, was published broadcast, but not a word of the comment in which I shattered every particle of it has been given to the readers of Smion 1896.--288 the newspaper in which that false table appeared. In the same way these statements with regard to the Werribee and other trusts have been scattered all over the colony with flaming headlines, and nothing like a fair and sufficient rendering of what I have f;aid in reply will be given to the readers of that paper.
